Views sought on draft first aid guidance - 27/03/2013

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched a consultation on the content of revised guidance to help businesses put in place appropriate arrangements for the provision of first aid.

The six-week consultation begins (25 March) and HSE is keen to hear the views of businesses and workers on new draft guidance material that will help them assess their needs when selecting an appropriate first aid training provider. The consultation document is available on the HSE website at: http://www.hse.gov.uk/consult/condocs/cd251.htm[1]

The current Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) text on first aid may also be removed and incorporated into the new guidance to provide simple, comprehensive information for all.

The changes are part of HSE's work to make it easier for businesses and other users to understand what they need to do to comply with health and safety law, while maintaining standards. They will be of interest to businesses of all sizes and from all sectors.

British employers serious about Health and Safety - 18/07/2012

For the year ending November 2011, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reported that 171 workers were killed at work. Although higher than 2010 (147) this is 17% lower than the average for the previous five years, with these figures falling steadily since the early 90's. The fatal injury rate in the UK is consistently one of the lowest in Europe - in fact the lowest among the five largest EU countries for a six year period.

Moving and Handling tip - 18/07/2012

Not sure if someone is able to weight bare? As part of your dynamic risk assessment using the Load, Individual, Task and Environment ( LITE) approach ask the person to lean forward in the seat and shuffle to the edge of the seat. If they can’t they probably can’t stand. Then ask them to lift each foot up and down. If they can’t they probably can’t stand. Then ask them to push their shin against your hand. If they have little power they probably can’t stand. If in doubt stop and seek the use of an appropriate aid or piece of equipment.

First Aid tip - 18/07/2012

Everyone is trained to place a person in the recovery position when unconscious. But what about when they are found face down and not on their backs? If so after your safety checks and establishing the person is breathing, tip the head back to open the airway then pull the knee closest to you up towards the patient’s chest and at the same time push on the shoulder on the same side. This will then allow the arm to rest under the face and the person is in the recovery position. Do not leave them on their stomach it may obstruct the airway and makes breathing difficult as the chest and diaphragm are under pressure. When this is done check again for breathing.

Hospital staff training boosts de escalation - 18/07/2012

Powers brought into force more than two years ago to help NHS staff deal with antisocial behavior on hospital premises are proving very effective, where used according to staff feedback and national figures. The Criminal Justice and Immigration Act created a criminal offence of causing a nuisance or disturbance on NHS premises and refusing to leave, as well as a new power to enable authorised NHS staff to remove a person suspected of committing this offence.
