Course Details

Course Aims

• To enable employers to have “competent people” to assess risks associated with manual handling.
• To reduce risk of injury to staff.
• To avoid prosecution and litigation.

This course has been designed with the core aim of creating a confident and more motivated, competent person to assess manual handling risks in the workplace. Participants must have knowledge of safer handling techniques. The content will be adapted to either the moving of inanimate or animate loads.

Course Introduction

This course has been designed to ensure each member of your team is equipped with manual handling risk assessment skills so that, risks are reduced to employees, mitigating your risk to claims and litigation.

The course centres on developing skills by combining the use of criterion based risk assessment with current best practice handling techniques.

This course stimulates an ideal climate for change to attitudes, practices and motivation which is essential to improving safer handling in the work place.

Participants learn how to conduct and record formal risk assessments and how to separate trivial from significant risks.

This programme was originally designed in 1994 and has been subsequently developed to keep up with current best practice and legal requirements.

What delegates will learn

• How the law in respect of manual handling applies
• How the law in respect of handling equipment applies
• How to filter trivial from significant risks
• When to record findings
• How to apply T.I.L.E. to manual handling
• How to apply guidelines for pulling and pushing
• How to record and when to re visit assessments

Course Objectives:

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

• Understand the requirements of the Manual Handling Operations Regs. 1992. LOLER Regs. 1998. Provision and use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992 and Management of Health & Safety at Work regulations 1999 and their application to manual handling.
• Identify the four elements of risk assessment using the TILE format (Task, Individual, Load, Environment)
• Conduct and record under simulated conditions at least two assessments

Assessment process

This will be overall and continuous, against the course objectives.

Certification / Accreditation:

On successful completion of this programme participants will receive a Solutions certificate of competence.

Special requirements of course participants:

Should have knowledge of safer handling practice.

Course Trainers:

Solutions trainers come from ambulance and nursing backgrounds. The team have extensive experience in training both manual handling instructors and assessors. All are recognised by the Middlesex University and EDEXCEL as accredited manual handling trainers / assessors.
