Course Details

Course Aims

• To reduce risk of injury to staff handling loads.
• To assist with compliance of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.
• To avoid prosecution and litigation.
• To enable participants to become competent manual handling assessors and instructors.

This course has been designed with the core aim of empowering people with the basic knowledge and skills to conduct manual handling risk assessment and instruct others in manual handling.

Course Introduction

This course has been designed to ensure each member of your team is equipped with up to date manual handling training and personal risk assessment skills so that, risks are reduced to employees, mitigating your risk to claims and litigation.

The course centres on improving manual handling by combining the use of criterion based risk assessment with current best practice handling techniques.

This course stimulates an ideal climate for change to attitudes, practices and motivation which is essential to improving safer handling in the work place.

Participants discover simple and effective ways to move and handle inanimate loads in a manner that requires far less physical effort, and improves confidence in a range of environments.

They will also be trained to instruct others effectively.

This programme was originally designed in 1994 and has been subsequently developed to keep up with current best practice and legal requirements.

• Gain a better understanding of spinal mechanics
• How to look after your back
• How to conduct a personal or dynamic risk assessment in order to avoid , reduce or eliminate risks
• How to communicate when handling in a team
• How to safely move and handle inanimate loads without the use of equipment
• How to safely instruct others in manual handling techniques

Course Objectives:

On completion of training participants should be able to:

• Understand the basic legal framework in respect of manual handling in the UK
• Explain the basic causes of muscular-skeletal injury
• Demonstrate how to perform a personal risk assessment and apply it to the moving and handling of loads
• Correctly move and handle loads – single handed and in pairs
• Conduct and record manual handling risk assessments under simulated conditions
• Deliver effectively and safely, one theoretical and one practical manual handling element from the Handling Carefully resource pack, to a group of no more than six people

Assessment process

This will be overall and continuous, against the course objectives and completion of a multiple choice paper.

Solutions Certificate EDEXCEL/BTEC award
Assessment criteria and registration fee available on request.

Special requirements of course participants:

They should be free of injury or any medical condition that may place them at risk of injury.

Course Trainers:

Solutions trainers come from NHS professional backgrounds and have adult teaching/ training qualifications. All are recognised by the Middlesex University and EDEXCEL as accredited manual handling trainers.
